The Lost Wax Carving and Casting Process:
With hot, hot wax I draw and build organic forms on mannequins and around stones. Each of these sculptural and adornment pieces are added to a wax tree and placed in an iron flask. Liquid investment (similar to plaster) is poured around the tree creating a mold, which is then placed in a kiln to melt out the wax and raise its temperature. I then melt sterling silver, bronze or gold at 1900 degrees and pour it into the hot mold. Let it rest for a time, then slowly dip the castings (investment mold) in water. The mold breaks and is cut away leaving what was once the tree of wax and is now silver, bronze or gold. The individual pieces are clipped from the tree, sanded and cleaned, bails and posts are soldered on, and the work is tumbled. Stones carefully set in place, I buff and polish each jewel; and, they are delivered to their new homes.
