Shop Sculptural Art Jewelry carved in wax and cast in recycled silver, bronze and gold by Crystal Hartman...

Crystal Hartman is a multi-media artist and sculptural jeweler.  Inspired by color, texture, storytelling and line, she creates abstract botanical paintings and illustrations in ink, watercolor, acrylic and oil on paper and canvas, assemblage artist books, video, and sculptural jewelry drawn in wax. In the studio, large colorful paintings inspire sculptural miniatures with the warmth of conscious creation and intimacy meant to be worn for memory, love and courage, individually as a talisman, as an art object. Casting originals in recycled metals and setting natural, conflict-free stones, custom designs are available… please contact with questions or proposals.

The Lost Wax Carving and Casting Process:

With hot wax I draw and build organic forms on mannequins and around stones. Each of these sculptural adornment pieces is added to a wax tree and placed in an iron flask. Liquid investment (similar to plaster) is poured around the tree creating a mold, which is then placed in a kiln to melt out the wax and raise its temperature. I then melt recycled sterling silver, bronze or gold at 1900 degrees and pour it into the hot mold. Let it rest for a time, then slowly quench it in water. The mold breaks and is cut away leaving what was once the tree of wax and is now silver, bronze or gold. The individual pieces are clipped from the tree, sanded and cleaned, bails and posts are soldered on, and the work is tumbled. Stones carefully set in place, I buff and polish each jewel; and, they are delivered to their new homes.

The Bees: An ongoing meditation on pollinators and pollination, always open to collaboration…

(portfolio of work and exhibition information soon)

In the spring on the sun soaked, rich, red dirt that held my body, stuck in my hair and remains in my pockets and heart, I lay with the wild honeybees that carried me to their trees and changed a cold concept of nature and service into a warmth and harmony worth sharing.  Willowtail Springs offered me the space to breathe, listen and relate a story of the natural world.  Inspired by the quiet and hum of life, by the ripples in the lake that found their way onto the handmade rice paper scrolls, this series of pollinators was created in a temporal process with honey-based watercolor, ink and chalk.
