Dandelions
dandelions, ink, paper + wool to keep them safe in travel
2026
This is a book of dandelions and friendship.
Ann and I walk barefoot in the fields each spring collecting the tall stems of the dandelions growing in the warming light. Sometimes, after it rains and the clouds drift away, the sun shines a bit brighter and the flowers shoot up extra long, these are the most satisfying days for collecting. Ann is a weaver and she taught me to make cordage, twining together fibers to create a rope for binding, carrying, bringing together. Making cordage is of the earliest human skills, it brings us nets, slings, even the pyramids were possible because of cordage. I think of this when I twist the fibers between my fingers. I think of all the others who have made cordage before, who make it now, who will make it later. These stories bring the feelings of gathering and honoring earth to life and turn them into the awareness of a shared thread.
The box that holds this dandelion cordage is made from paper yellowed by sunshine and drying botanicals left out and moved from one corner to another on a table given to me by my friend Roy. Some of the dandelions used in this cordage are two, three, and four years old, others we collected last spring. The words on Joining typed on the paper were written on a walk with my best friend Lola, we sing them often.
In travel this book is wrapped in wool cordage made of the fibers collected from well loved alpacas cleaned and brushed into roving just outside Durango Colorado, my hometown.
